Bata Shoe Factory took home a Canadian Green Building Award in the Large Residential category. The project is a model for rural sustainable development and includes residential apartments, retail and community uses. Retaining the original 1939 concrete structure saved close to 80% of the embodied carbon from the original building and the HVAC systems are powered entirely through a geothermal energy source. From the jury: “The project is exemplary for its respectful adaptation of an important part of Ontario’s industrial heritage, its well-considered mixed-use program, and its rehabilitation of the former parking lot that surrounded the building. In addition to the carbon benefit of retaining the concrete structure, the project has very good energy performance.”

The Canadian Green Building Awards is a program of Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine (SABMag). Click here to see the full list of winning projects: https://sabmagazine.com/awards/awards-winners-2020/
