John H. Daniels Faculty Competition

Toronto, Ontario

Designed in joint venture with Sauerbruch Hutton of Berlin, Quadrangle’s finalist design proposed a nine storey addition fitted into and cantilevered over the courtyard of the existing 1920s building. The design respects the existing structure both in terms of its fabric and history. Natural ventilation was incorporated, providing breathing space and improved air quality. The three story extension to the building wraps the eastern façade to College Street, creating a distinct building form, and a contemporary and fully accessibly entrance to the building. An atrium space, conceived to be the focal space for the department, was created between the new and existing buildings, bringing an abundance of natural light to the interior. Clad in a coloured patterned glass façade, the language of the cantilevered extension complements the surrounding brick facades while giving the faculty a strong urban identity.
