Sustainability

Creating sustainable spaces has been a focus of Quadrangle’s practice for decades, while an overall awareness of environmental issues informs our approach to every project. The firm’s sustainability strategy shapes both external and internal processes, as we constantly extend the possibilities of green thinking in the buildings we create, as well as the office where we work. Our in-house sustainability strategist, Michelle Xuereb, spearheads efforts to consider sustainable solutions in the first phases of a project, when they can have the deepest impact. For example, in designing the tenant fit-out for the Corus Quay media headquarters and broadcast centre – the initial development in Toronto’s mixed-use East Bayfront neighbourhood – we moved early in the process to coordinate with the base building architects, achieving significant reductions in energy and materials requirements, as well as waste generation. Internally, we work constantly to improve our green practices, introducing waste monitoring, vehicle sharing, award-winning bike facilities, digital document storage, eco-conscious cleaning and other measures that keep sustainability top of mind while providing a healthy workplace for our people.

Corus Entertainment

Corus is located in a LEED® ND Neighbourhood, the first of its kind in Canada, is LEED® Gold Certified for Core and Shell and is targeting LEED® Gold for Commercial Interiors. At every opportunity, the design team collaborated with Corus to apply sustainability standards to all facets of the new Corus Entertainment headquarters, including an increased access to natural light, individually controlled lighting systems, the uses of virtual technology to reduce number of servers, a five storey bio-wall, stormwater management systems, and green roof.
